Mozambique Insights is an online publication seeking to bring a Mozambican perspective to the myriad of voices reporting on the country. We operate with passion, integrity, and rigorous fact-checking.

We strive to be a relevant source for in-depth news and analysis on politics, oil and gas, development, banking and finance, and security in Mozambique.

Bayano Valy (Managing Partner)

Bayano Valy is an experienced journalist who cut his teeth at the Mozambique News Agency English Desk. He interned with the now-defunct Gemini News Service in London. He was correspondent for the Inter Press Service and Bloomberg News. He also worked in the NGO sector as a communications officer. He has lived in Eswatini (Manzini), Zimbabwe (Harare) and England (London).

Luis Nhachote (Editor-in-Chief)

Luis Nhachote is a multi-award-winning Mozambican investigative journalist, author, editor, and media trainer with more than 25 years of experience covering corruption, governance, organised crime, human rights, and the management of natural resources.

He began his journalism career in 1999 at Savana, Mozambique’s first independent weekly newspaper. Throughout his career, he has held senior editorial positions at some of the country’s leading independent media outlets. He was one of the founding journalists of Canal de Moçambique, served as the first Editor of Confidencial, worked as a journalist and editor at Zambeze and @Verdade, and later became an Associate Editor of Ponto por Ponto.

Nhachote also worked as an investigative journalist with the Centro de Integridade Pública (CIP), where he conducted investigations into corruption, public accountability, and governance. His reporting has contributed to significant public debate and institutional accountability, including an investigative series on Aeroportos de Moçambique (AdM) that resulted in the conviction of senior public officials in 2010.

Internationally, his work has appeared in Al Jazeera, Mail & Guardian, Sunday Times, Forbes Africa, and The Continent. He has also worked as a consultant and contributing researcher for leading international organisations and think tanks, including  Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, StopGas , Intelwatch and Chatham House, producing research and strategic reports on governance, organised crime, security, and natural resources in Southern Africa.

An accomplished author, Nhachote has published two books with Gala-Gala Edições: Letters to President Chissano (2023), a collection of open letters originally addressed to former President Joaquim Chissano, and From the Top of the Hill: All Chronicles 2003–2005 (2025), a compilation of his acclaimed newspaper columns reflecting on Mozambican politics and society.

His work has earned numerous national and international distinctions, including the Grand Prize for Journalism awarded by the Sindicato Nacional dos Jornalistas (SNJ) and Vodacom Mozambique (2008), recognition as Runner-up Finalist at the CNN MultiChoice African Journalism Awards (2009), and the Best Foreign Correspondent Award at the Media Awards 2025, honouring his reporting for Mail & Guardian and The Continent.

In addition to his reporting and writing, Nhachote serves as the Executive Coordinator of the Centro de Jornalismo Investigativo (CJI) in Mozambique, where he leads investigative journalism projects, mentors young reporters, and promotes independent, evidence-based journalism across the region.
