The leader of Mozambique’s Renamo opposition party, Ossufo Momade, has denied accusations that he is a trojan horse for the ruling Frelimo party.
Speaking to the weekly Dossiers & Factos, Momade shrugged off such accusations as a work of “jealous people who have nothing to do,” adding that if he were doing President Filipe Nyusi’s bidding, why had the Renamo parliamentarian group tried to sabotage the passing of through a bill changing the date for the announcement of the 2024 general elections.
The change to the Electoral Law reduces the deadline for announcing the date of the general elections from 18 to 15 months – the changing of the deadline is important because it will afford Frelimo an opportunity to amend the constitution without using opposition votes, which it cannot do before 12 June.
Momade also denied that he has been negotiating deals with President Nyusi without the knowledge of Renamo’s Political Commission.
Comment
All does not to be well within Renamo, not least because of Momade’s own performance. With so many own goals scored by Frelimo, Momade has failed to present a clear vision of what Mozambique would look like under a Renamo government.
Furthermore, his musical chairs game seems to be biased against more able party members, robbing the party of much needed fresh ideas, which leads his opponents to ask why remove those who seem to be more articulate and can clearly present the party’s ideas.
Consequently, Renamo seems to be stuck in a limbo, to the detriment of the country.
