Mozambique has approved a visa waiver for foreign nationals hailing from West African, Asian and European countries, including the Americas, according to a Council of Ministers press release.
Included in the list of exempted countries is Israel, with which Mozambique has been developing commercial ties. In 2020, business people from both countries established the Mozambique-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACIMI) with a focus on agriculture, energy, health and water.
Consequently, the visa waiver will make it easy for Israeli citizens to travel to Mozambique.
Comment
Mozambique has a long-held policy of supporting the right of the Palestinian people to independence and self-determination. It was with this view that it joined other African countries in denying Israel an observer status at the African Union.
However, of late, Mozambique has been making warming up to Israel not least because of what it can offer to the country’s security apparatus. Mozambique Insights understands that Israel has been supplying the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces with military equipment, and there are rumours that an Israeli company is working with authorities to offer tools for spying on civilians
