From October 2017, the war narrative in the Mozambican Cabo Delgado province has been that of “Us vs Them”, with the “Us” being the good, innocent and many other positive descriptions, and the “Them” meaning evil doers, terrorists, insurgents and all sort of negative epithets.
It is indisputable that the deaths do not take sides or count in the above descriptions. People are dying from the actions of both sides: Terrorists and the FDS, who are blamed for the clashes on both sides of this war.
Alex Perry, a British journalist, took his time analysing the death toll following, from example, events such as the Palma attack (24 March 2021) and Mocímboa da Praia (5 August 2020) and many other attacks by the so-called insurgents, and presents the first serious attempt at counting the number of the dead from the armed conflict in northern Moçambique.
Perry shared his thoughts on his findings with Mozambique Insights that we kindly share with our readers in this podcast.
Good listening.
